Mixed media collage(select works)
Although my career has been largely defined by my documentary-driven photographic work, ideas of image appropriation, art historical referencing, and narrative making through collage have long been at the heart of my artistic practice. Collage has provided a certain creative freedom, and it has provided opportunity to explore symbolism and metaphor, humor and irony, subversiveness and ambiguity not usually attainable in the stricter confines of documentary and photojournalism work. The collages are made during quiet moments at home in my studio, providing time for visual play, experimentation, and reflection.
EXPEDITIONS (2020-2024) is a collection of collage images created from vintage National Geographic magazines. First begun during the COVID-19 quarantine, the small, monochrome works focus on themes of isolation, distance, disconnection, and interior/exterior space while also critically deconstructing and resituating 20th century Western visual tropes hallmarked by National Geographic Society photographers and editors.
