Yesterday in Lawrence Co., Ala. where Donald Trump carried 76% of the vote.

“I’m on the Trump train!” city worker Bonnie Hill said as she tended flowers in front of the Lawrence County Courthouse (image 2). “I don’t trust all these mail-in votes. If you can go to Walmart then you can go vote.”

With today’s news of a Biden victory, my social media feeds are full of celebration. As am I. But I wonder how places like Lawrence County will respond in the days and months ahead, and whether we might find ourselves on the difficult road to reconciliation or to further division and unfounded mistrust.
